“You’re pretty for a black girl.”

A phrase I have heard since grade school.

I am Black (African-American), Native American (Occaneechi + Cherokee Indian), & Irish.

I was born and raised in New Mexico and because of that, I am often mistaken for another race.

Growing up, I struggled finding the right products to style my curly hair.

In high school, my hair was usually slicked back in a bun. I would straighten my hair for homecoming, prom, and other special occasions because I believed wearing my hair curly wouldn’t be considered pretty.

It wasn’t until 2005 when I started my freshman semester of college, that I started wearing my curly hair down almost everyday.

The last time I straighten my hair was in 2009 when I graduated from New Mexico State University.

In March 2011 I created my beauty blog, sassycurls.com with the mission to help women embrace their individuality, value their self-worth, and discover their dreams.

As I started embracing the beauty of my curly hair, I became more confident expressing who I am.

My goal is to empower women to embrace their textured hair and the melanin in their skin.

No matter what the style. No matter what the shade.

Black is beautiful.
